No In-Lab Waste Containers will be assigned ahead of time for sealed sources.  End users are instructed to simply email ors@ors.gatech.edu to request a pickup. Upon receipt of an email requesting disposal of a sealed source, create a waste container in EHSA and then add the source to the container per the instructions below after the source is picked up.  

  1. Create a Waste Container
    • Click "EHSA".
    • Click "Waste".
    • Click "RAM Waste Containers" under the "RAM Waste" heading.
    • Select "All" in the "View:" drop-down menu to show all current waste containers.
    • Click "+Add"
    • A prompt to "Duplicate Previous Container" appears.  Click "Cancel".
    • Enter the Waste ID # in the "Container #" field  
      • W4digityear-AU#-two digit incremental number (e.g., W2019-483-21).
      • Refer to tracking sheet in Boggs 3-60 for the next applicable number.
    • Select "Georgia Tech" as the "Waste Generator".
    • Select "In-Lab RAM Waste" as the "Storage Type".
    • Select the type of waste container being used for this container number in the drop-down menu for "Container Type".
    • Select "Sealed Source Disposal" as the "Waste Type"
    • Leave the "Volume" fields blank even though it is marked as a required field.
    • Under "In Lab Waste Container" select the correct PI name, select "Sealed Source Disposal" as the "Usage Category", and select the applicable isotope(s).
    • Under "Storage Location" select the "Building" and room "Location" for the building and room where the sealed source is located prior to pickup.
  2. Add Source to Waste Container
    • Under "RAM Inventory", click "Removal of Isotope from PI's Inventory".
    • Select the name of the radioactive material Authorized User from the "PI" drop-down menu.
    • Double-click the row for the source for which you'd like to record use or disposal information.
    • Under the "Usage for Inventory #:" section, click the "+Add" button.
    • In the "Waste Description" field type "Sealed Source".
    • In the "Disposal Date" field, enter the date the source is being picked up by ORS.
    • In the "Activity Used"/"Volume Used" field, enter the appropriate activity in the indicated unit of measure. 
      • For a sealed source, ensure that the "Activity Used" is equal to the "Decayed" activity listed under the section "Total Inventory as of ..."
    • Under "Usage Category", select "Sealed Source Disposal".
      • A "Container" field will appear to the right of the "Usage Activity" field.  Select the container with the "Waste ID #" that matches the one you made in step 1 above. 
    • Check the "Disposed?" box.
    • Click "Save".
  3. Seal Container, Request a Pickup, and Process the Pickup
    • Seal the container and request a waste pickup according to "Seal In-Lab RAM Waste Container and Request Waste Pickup" at https://www.ehs.gatech.edu/node/2728.
    • Click "EHSA".
    • Click "Waste".
    • Click "Process Waste Pickups" under "Waste Pickup Requests".
    • Click "View In Lab Ram Containers".
    • In the "Select" column click the check box next to each container that was picked up.
    • Click the button "Mark as Picked-Up".
    • A box will pop up to change the status of the container; select "ORS Waste Area"
    • Click "Save".  This will take you back to the waste container view.
    • Double-click the row for the waste container you just marked as picked up and changed the status to "ORS Waste Area".
    • Change the "Storage Location" to "Building" Gilbert Hillhouse Boggs and "Location" B-7D.  Click "Save".
    • Run the report "Form G" under "RAM Waste Container Reports", using the date of pickup, for the waste container picked up.  Save a copy in the ORS Files/Waste/Form G.  Print the Form G.
    • Fill in a yellow waste tag on the container based on the information in the printed Form G and attach it to the container.
    • File the hard copy Form G in the file folder in the drawer at the HP Tech desk in Boggs 3-60.
    • In EHSA, go to Inventory, Sealed Source Inventory.
    • Change the inventory drop-down at the top of the screen to "Disposed Inventory" and search for the sealed source you just placed in the waste room.
    • Click the red "Sealed Source" button on the row for the source of interest.
    • In the "Status" box, select the "Stored" radio button and then click "Save".  This will now cause the source to show up properly in the leak test reports for sources that are in storage in the waste room awaiting final disposal.
    • Ensure the waste container is physically placed in the waste room.
  4. After the Source has Been Shipped
    • Go to the VENDORyyyy waste container into which the source was placed, double-click the row for the source shipped, and record the final disposal information in the "Final Disposal" box.  To do this, enter the date shipped, check the "Disposed?" checkbox, and select "Return to Manufacturer" or other applicable item.  Click "Save".
