The following provides an overview of the steps involved in the tracking of radioactive material inventory and the usage and disposal process for RAM with links to corresponding EHSA processes embedded. The responsible party for each step is in parentheses.

  1. Add In-Lab RAM waste containers to EHSA prior to delivery of the physical containers to the RAM lab. (ORS)
  2. As RAM Radiation Workers use the radioactive material, they log the usage and disposal on a hardcopy "Form E Radioactive Material Use and Waste Log".   These entries are then input by the end user into EHSA. (AUs and Radiation Workers)
  3. When waste added to a container has no source number, follow the instructions for "Process ORS Waste with no ORS Source Number". (ORS)
  4. When a lab is finished with an in-lab RAM waste container or it is full, the container is physically sealed and then virtually sealed in EHSA. (AUs and Radiation Workers)
  5. The end user requests a waste pickup via EHSA. (AUs and Radiation Workers)
  6. Before physically picking up the waste container, print the Form G to take with you. ORS will then physically pick up the waste container, mark it picked up in EHSA, change the container from in-lab RAM waste to ORS Waste Area, and place it in the ORS waste room. This is also the time the waste tag is completed with the waste totals.  Scan a copy of the Form G as a PDF to ORS Files, and place the hard copy in Boggs 3-60. (ORS)
  7. The waste will either be stored for decay-in-storage, pending pickup by the radioactive waste broker, or pending shipment to original vendor for disposal. (ORS)
  8. ORS will add final waste containers in EHSA representative of the actual disposal container. (ORS)
  9. For waste that is decayed-in-storage (DIS), see Processing and Documenting DIS Waste Disposals. (ORS)
  10. After waste has been added to a final disposal drum and the drum is sealed, be sure make the transfers to the final drum in EHSA, match the physical waste tags to the printed Form Gs, print the RAM Waste Manifest from EHSA and place this manifest with the tags/Form G's in a folder for the filing room.
  11. After disposal according to step 7, the waste will be marked according to its final disposal method in EHSA. (ORS)
  12. Waste that has undergone final disposal will be archived in EHSA. (ORS)
  13. When a particular source is fully disposed, PDF of the ”Rad Source Usage History” report shall be saved in ORS Files/Isotope Receipts using the “Rad Source Usage History” report in EHSA. Instructions for accessing this report are found under “Rad Source Usage History Report” in the online EHSA User Handbook at https://www.ehs.gatech.edu/node/3503.
